We will gather in April for this yearly event in Chicago, Illinois at the W Lakeshore Hotel where a highly informative educational program has been developed.
We have secured a number of highly regarded speakers from several of the Chicago area medical schools and I anticipate an excellent turnout. All members of the Academy are encouraged to make plans now to attend.

I am pleased to announce that plans for the Academy’s 42nd Annual Scientific Meeting in Chicago next April are coming along nicely. Our organizers are working closely with faculty from local Medical Schools and several highly regarded surgeons from the Chicago area have agreed to participate in our program. Our invited speakers will present cutting edge information on topics related to Neurological and Orthopaedic Surgery as requested in needs assessment surveys.
In addition to our invited faculty from the Chicago area and other parts of the country as well, we have received a number of interesting presentation proposals from members and non-members alike. The sessions being presented on Friday morning, April 27th and Saturday morning, April 28th will be finalized in the coming weeks and registration information will be available shortly thereafter.

Planning has commenced for the 42nd Annual Scientific Meeting of the American Academy of Neurological and Orthopaedic Surgeons; being held in Chicago, Illinois, April 26-28, 2018 at the W Lakeshore Hotel. We will again join the United States Section of the International College of Surgeons (ICS) for their annual meeting in order to provide an enhanced experience for members of both groups.
Our Scientific Organizing Committee representatives to the ICS Planning Committee are actively assisting in the development of the overall scientific program and will continue to work with the other members of the Academy Scientific Organizing Committee to develop Neurosurgical and Orthopaedic sessions that will be presented on Friday and Saturday during the meeting. Joint sessions will be developed for sessions presented at other times and will include topics such as ethics, global surgery and trauma.
Those who wish to submit a presentation proposal must submit electronically through ICS (visit www.ficsonline.org for more information and to submit). Please note that the published deadline for submissions is October 1st. This is 2 full months earlier than usual, so please be vigilant as we approach this date.
I encourage all interested parties to participate by informing your Academy colleagues about what you are experiencing in the OR. Short case reports and “how I do it” presentations have been identified as being of significant interest and will be included in the final program if determined to be appropriate. We will be working with the numerous local medical schools and Chicago hospitals to include scientific presentations from invited guest speakers, but abstract presentations by members of the Academy and other surgeons who have information related to our specialties is vital to the overall success of our meeting.
I expect every Academy member to make an effort to attend the 42nd Annual Scientific Meeting in Chicago and many of you to submit an original presentation proposal on a topic that has not previously been included in an Academy meeting. I look forward to seeing you in Chicago.

Academy members and friends, it is with great pleasure that I report on our successful Annual Scientific Meeting in Seattle this past June. The educational content of our program was excellent with quite a few faculty members from the University of Washington joining us for 2 days of stimulating sessions.
I was extremely delighted that Dr. Richard Ellenbogen, the Chair of the Department of Neurosurgery at UW, was able to participate as our Keynote Speaker on Saturday morning. His recap of The 10 Things You Need to Know About Concussion was an important reminder of the dangers this serious injury can pose – especially to young athletes.
My sincere gratitude is expressed to not only Dr. Ellenbogen, but all the members of the UW faculty that participated in our sessions. Feedback was extremely positive and the Q and A portion of the program certainly demonstrated the significant interest the audience had in the topics presented. Our sessions ran long on both days due to the enthusiasm all our attendees had in the educational content offered.
While we all enjoyed Seattle and learned about some new approaches to patient care, we now must begin to think about next year. The 2018 Annual Scientific Meeting, our 42nd, will be held in Chicago at the W Lakeshore Hotel. Joining the International College of Surgeons once again the meeting will be moved next year to an earlier date. We will be meeting on April 27th and 28th with the ICS meetings beginning on the 26th.
You may have already seen the ICSUS Call for Presentations, which was mailed in mid-June. Due to the earlier dates, you should pay particular attention to the submission deadline date. Submissions will be due two full months earlier than usual with the new cutoff being October 1, 2017. All Academy members are encouraged to submit your research as well as case reports and join us in Chicago.
