The Board Certifications offered through the American Academy of Neurological and Orthopaedic Surgeons
The American Academy of Neurological and Orthopaedic Surgeons (AANOS or Academy) is a charitable, non-profit, scientific and educational society whose mission includes the administration of board certification exams for select specialty boards in the following medical specialties:
- Clinical Neurological Surgery (ABCNS)
- Clinical Orthopedic Surgery (ABCOS)
- Spinal Surgery (ABSS)
- Neurology (ABCN)
The aforementioned boards are registered and trademarked as well as authorized and approved by the American Federation of Medical Accreditation and registered in the State of Nevada.
The Academy was founded in 1976 and is run by an unpaid volunteer Board of Directors. There are separate committees within AANOS that oversee credentialing and examinations. It is under the direction of these committees that the Board Certifications are conducted.
The Board Certifications offered through the American Academy of Neurological and Orthopaedic Surgeons have been reviewed by the U.S. Department of Labor and in 1984 a ruling was made that the Department of Labor,
“…recognizes our Board as a bonafide medical specialty Board, and that our Diplomates will be accorded status equivalent to that of ABMS Diplomates in their respective fields.”
