The purpose and responsibility of the American Federation of Medical Accreditation (AFMA) is to meet the needs of organizations with merit that administer medical specialty boards, have a special mission, and that may not have been recognized by other established accrediting bodies.
AFMA is an independent non-profit organization that ensures AANOS maintains high standards and appropriate internal policies and practices for the administration of examinations for board certification. Through the boards it recognizes, AFMA’s goal is to enhance the boards of other accreditation bodies and add an extra dimension that they may not be able to provide, traditionally or politically.
